I visited with Monica Fox in downtown Wilmette Saturday. This, after bumping into Brenna. Monica was talking about butterflies and the pollinator garden at her church. She used to - still does - like capturing caterpillars and releasing the butterflies.
This reminded me of the Cecropia Moths we had growing up in Lakewood. They were amazing and we raised some to release as moths as well.
They're huge - 3- to 4-inches across. And beautiful and fuzzy.
Once, we were a couple of hours late and one month emerged in a jar that was too small. And her wings couldn't expand. We placed her in a tree and a mate found her. Which reminds me of Erika playing matchmaker to cicadas.

The caterpillars are remarkable (or gross) as well and 2- to 3-inches long.

And the cocoons are quite bland and camouflaged.
